Cyiya Hill, Rwanda
Cyiya Coffee Washing Station is rooted in the community of Cyiya Hill in Rwanda’s Southern Province, where 200–300 smallholder farmers grow red Bourbon on fertile volcanic soils. Most farmers tend modest plots alongside food crops and livestock, creating a diverse, sustainable landscape. During harvest, cherries are carefully hand-picked and sorted to ensure only the best reach the station. The region's cool climate slows fermentation, contributing to the station’s reputation for meticulous processing and quality. Beyond coffee, Cyiya supports its community through farmer training, seasonal employment, and free distribution of coffee and shade tree seedlings, while promoting environmental stewardship through conservation programs and wastewater treatment initiatives.
